Hello everyone :)
I decided it would be a cool idea to log everything I'm working on in a blog form so then I can go back and see how things are progressing along!
To begin I guess I should explain what's been going on!
I bought Fancy as a coming 3 year old with about 30-50 days on her, I still am unsure exactly of what she officially had on her. She was sold to me as a hunter under saddle show horse. She's done well but over the 2 years I've owned her I've noticed more and more problems coming through her training.
For example:
Day one of me ever working with her after I bought her I was just going to lunge her a little and have her just walk trot around on the lunge and be done. I wanted her first experience with me to be a nice pleasant easy one. Well I get her in the arena and out on the line and she takes off in a dead gallop running basically until she was dripping in sweat. She then turned (all on her own) and when the other direction doing the same thing.
So I've been working through little problems here and there with her and I finally decided it was time for me to get an actual trainer to help me. My biggest problems with her is that she isn't balanced and bends the wrong way one direction and then she gives LOTS of evil nasty mare faces.
I've had two lessons so far!
1/29
Day one of lessons, all we really did was worked on getting her to stay straight and in front of my leg. Trainer talked about how she stays super behind my leg and move off my leg at all. We walked and trotted the majority of the lesson. By the time we were done she was staying in front of my leg and staying straighter. Mare faces by the end got much better after I just stopped even paying attention to them.
2/2
Day two of lessons we did a lot more work keeping her straight and leg yielding around. She again gave a few mare faces but not as bad as day one. We again did a lot of trotting. Worked a lot today on teaching fancy to move with my seat, as in the speed. She picked it up REALLY quick. She's gotten so much better now that she is starting to think about all the little things versus looking for the fight. We did a little canter work, basically just working on me maintaining the same position and not dropping everything when we move into the canter. Once I break bad habits things will get a lot better with fancy as well. We did a lot of trot work without stirrups, basically just doing the same thing as before with getting her moving faster and slower depending on my seat. Then after I felt like I was going to die we stopped for the day.
Going back out to practice for my next lesson tomorrow!
